DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2001--To address the continuing economic slowdown in the United States telecommunications networking industry, Alcatel today announced an acceleration of its cost management initiatives in the U.S.

The initiatives, designed to gain efficiencies in Alcatel's overall U.S. operating budget, will include a reduction of 2,500 positions and additional facility consolidation in the U.S.

Employees affected by the reduction will receive a severance package and outplacement services.

they know as much as we know.
it will be interesting to see what will happen to profit margins on component next year, when demand will increase and capacity will be sharply reduced........
