Only the democrats honor their elderly by making sure they have enough basic necessities for life. Social security, welfare, food stamps, free lunches are all democratic successes. You can't name too many similar successes by the opposition.

I'd guess it was the mid-80's when THE ECONOMIST did a feature on the state of healthcare around the world.

The part on Britain's socialized healthcare was sad. They interviewed a young lady that had waited in queue through adolescence for surgery correcting a horrible disfigurement. When asked what she thought of Brit medicine, she replied to the effect that it was wonderful. "Free", you know.

It's been a long while, but it seems to me that Japan and Singapore were at or near the top at that time. One conclusion of the article was those places where Drs., hospitals, and medical insurers were competing with the butcher, the baker, and the candle stick maker, the better the rankings.
