1) There will be price difference between the non 1x and 1x handsets.

True...but the price differential isnt dramatic. An existing handset with the MSM3100 that is changed to an MSM5100 would have a price delta of around $20-$30. I cant remember the source for that number but it might have been Audiovox.

2) Although 1x handsets will be backward compatible with the existing networks. But before you actually test your products with the new networks, it is still sort of risky to have the handsets in the market before the networks are ready.

I agree with this reason. However, how long should the testing last? I would think that if the 1x networks were to launch on time that CDMA carriers should have a good idea about their stability by the spring.

3) It's actually not a bad idea to keep on upgrading the products from time to time. That can actually spice up the appetite of the public perception.

I am actually just thinking of existing IS-95A/B handsets that would have an upgraded chipset. The product differentiation would still come as new 1x handsets with color screens, bluetooth and position location were launched.

I would think that the fact that 1x handsets use much less capacity than IS-95A would more than make up for the $20-$30....especially when you consider the average life of a handset is probably 24 months. The potential for increased data revenue would just be a bonus...
