HD,

As one who works in transistor design, may I ask what your thoughts are to the future of IC's, when the Laws of Physics are stretched to their limit, probably somewhere at the .03 micron level? Do we move to bio-transistors as some have speculated, or do we find other ways of keeping the current processes of IC manufacturing for future chip designs? I am not a believer in pie-in-the-sky future predictions(such as the amoeba-like "chips" some are forecasting) because if one looks at the history of IC manufacturing, one will see that it has been a process of evolution, not revolution, moving in baby steps to get where we now are. Furthermore, I doubt many(any!) chip companies will be willing to spend $10 Billion or so on an idea which may prove too radical, which is part of the reason I firmly believe that whatever future iteration of chip design comes to light, AMAT will have to have a say in it for the chip industry to move forward with any degree of confidence. Any thoughts on this? TIA
