NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Stocks are looking to add to Monday's gains once trading begins Tuesday, though investors continue to sift through bad news on the earnings front.

Corning, which informed investors late Monday that it would be eliminating 1,000 jobs and miss its financial targets for the second half of the year, was a sour spot for the fiber-optic and networking groups in pre-market trading.

The stock (GLW) fell 5 percent in Instinet dealings. Among its peers, JDS Uniphase lost 50 cents to $11.25 while Ciena fell 49 cents to $31.75.

September S&P 500 futures gained 5.90 points, or 0.5 percent, and were trading about 0.80 point above fair value, according to HL Camp & Co. And Nasdaq futures tacked on 25.00 points, or 1.5 percent.

Over in the Treasury arena, the 10-year Treasury note was off 3/32 to yield ($TNX) 5.34 percent while the 30-year government bond erased 6/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.71 percent.

Tuesday's economic calendar contains only one second-tier release: May wholesale inventories. View and economic calendar and forecasts.

In the currency segment, dollar/yen added 0.2 percent to 125.51 while euro/dollar gained 0.8 percent to 0.8554.
