I think the logic that flows from the premise may be sound, but the premise that everyone will start using automated trailing stops set tight enough to precipitate the avalanche is suspect.

It does strike me though that this is basically the same argument used to prohibit selling short on a downtick, and that has been sacred for some time. Maybe there is a difference, but it's not obvious to me.
