Using people because they're there or are part of the culture, and doing things for religious reasons, are very different things.

And blaming religion because Stalin purged people to fight religion is, IMO, very twisted thinking.

The original point I was questioning was that Christianity was responsible for huge numbers of deaths. Your post doesn't change my doubt about the accuracy of that often claimed but never proved argument.

The Prussians were Christians and used the missionary as advance foot soldiers as did the colonials. The German Nationals sided with the Catholics to help advance their cause as well.

Russian Communism was partly a response to Christianity and their desire to stomp it out led to brutal crimes in the Crimea and Ukraine.

The Prussians and colonials may have used Christianity or more specifically Catholicism to advance their cause, but it was still their cause, not the cause of Christianity. Chris's point was - "Certainly there were many campaigns of violence by the church, but killing in the days of the crusades was fairly limited by the weaponry available, and the Inquisition, though brutal, didn't actually kill that many people. I'm not sure the cause of Christianity as many as..." In other words he was talking about killings for the cause of Christianity, not all killings by Christians.

Russian Communism was not mostly a response to Catholicism but even it it was its killings where hardly the fault of Christianity and definitely were not done in the name of or for the cause of Christianity.
