Perhaps it is reliable in most cases - I really wouldn't know: there are a couple of famous wrongful imprisonment cases here based on false 'evidence' from people who collaborated for lower sentences, but then again these may be the exceptions made famous because of the cases or because they were false.

However, I'd still judge that the confession of an experienced double/treble agent may not reveal quite the unvarnished truth...

I'd also assert that the guarantee of prison until natural death - especially if not in the most 'enlightened' conditions (i.e., deliberately dull, few or no privileges like books, TV, visitors etc) - should be a good deterrent... possibly better for an intelligent man who knows he will die anyway without hope of freedom. Or will he be allowed to go free, at some point?
