XO Communications' CEO Akerson Issues Statement On FCC Meeting
RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2001--XO Communications Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson issued the following statement following a meeting with FCC Chairman Michael Powell. Powell hosted Akerson, and several other chief executives of competitive telephone service providers, today at the Federal Communications Commissions Federal Leadership Summit in Washington D.C.

``I am gratified for the leadership and the time Chairman Powell committed today to continue the FCC's role in ensuring that the competitive initiatives inherent in the 1996 Telecommunications Act will occur,'' said Akerson. ``I believe that Chairman Powell recognizes the growing pains that are inherent to opening any monopoly market to competition. Under his leadership we believe the Commission will continue to measure and enforce progress in this de-monopolization of telecommunications markets through national performance measurements and strong enforcement penalties. We continue to hope the end result of Chairman Powell's involvement will be the natural conclusion of the '96 Act, namely, sustainable local telecommunications competition and consumer choice.''
