PRI Automation and KLA-Tencor Team to Speed Yield Management and Process Control in 300mm Fabs
New Transport Solution Accelerates Process-to-Inspection/Metrology Tool Transfer Times- Reducing Fab Latency Up to 30 Percent
BILLERICA, Mass., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRIA - news), and KLA-Tencor Corp. (Nasdaq: KLAC - news) -- global leaders in factory automation and process control, respectively, for the semiconductor industry -- today announced that they have engaged in an alliance designed to accelerate yield management and process control in 300mm fabs worldwide. The result of the alliance is the new TransFab(TM) Metroliner system, which enables high speed, automated material transport between the process tools needed to manufacture chips and the metrology and inspection systems needed to rigorously control process results and boost manufacturing yields. The net benefit for global chipmakers is accelerated time-to-corrective action when processes or yields drift beyond acceptable performance parameters.

Officials from both companies report that despite the speed of today's advanced process, inspection and metrology systems, delays in material transport coupled with scheduling issues significantly affect overall tool productivity and process control cycle times in today's fabs. The improved intrabay automation provided by the TransFab(TM) Metroliner system can help eliminate this potential bottleneck-reducing transport overhead time by as much as 30 percent over traditional systems. Equally significant is the potential impact on process control efficiency, since customers can now achieve the cycle time benefits associated with integrated metrology and inspection solutions without sacrificing the sensitivity and flexibility available only through stand-alone systems.

``Our TransFab Metroliner leverages the core competencies of two leading capital equipment suppliers to address a critical aspect of semiconductor manufacturing,'' said Mitch Tyson, PRI's president and chief executive officer. ``With its powerful combination of transport flexibility, FastPath(TM) routing logic, and ability to dynamically respond to priorities, TransFab Metroliner will streamline transport between the process tool and KLA-Tencor's metrology and inspection systems. This new capability will help both foundries and integrated device manufacturers accelerate the entire process control cycle, resulting in decreased manufacturing cycle times and improved fab productivity.''

According to Dennis Fortino, Group Executive Vice President at KLA-Tencor, the alliance with PRI is one of several innovative programs KLA-Tencor is undertaking to significantly speed yield learning and process control for chipmakers worldwide. ``By dramatically reducing the transport time between the process tools and our inspection/metrology systems, we can reduce customers' time to results. Best of all, we can achieve nearly all of the cycle time benefits promised by integrated process control strategies without any of the pitfalls. So customers get the speed and sensitivity they need at the lowest possible cost of ownership'' Fortino concluded.

TransFab Metroliner is the first solution to specifically target these concerns. For this application, PRI's TransFab unified material handling system has been optimized for use with KLA-Tencor's 300 mm inspection and metrology tools. The complete TransFab Metroliner system consists of PRI's AeroLoader® III overhead transport vehicles and TransNet(TM) material control software, as well as KLA-Tencor's full line of 300mm metrology and inspection systems.

The TransFab Metroliner Technology

At the heart of the TransFab Metroliner solution is PRI's AeroLoader OHT system. The AeroLoader provides tool-to-tool wafer and reticle delivery in highly automated 300 mm fabs. Another integral component of the TransFab Metroliner is PRI's TransNet material control software, which manages and tracks the movement of wafers throughout the TransFab network-making it easy for operators to know where their wafer lots are at any given moment. When TransFab Metroliner is coupled with PRI's Leverage® for Scheduling software, the wafer inspection process can be highly optimized to meet changing production requirements. Leverage for Scheduling is a powerful planning software tool that is capable of scheduling and rescheduling shop floor resources in a matter of minutes. Taking data from the manufacturing execution system (MES), Leverage for Scheduling can determine which inspection tool is available for wafer or reticle inspection and identify the lot to be inspected by that tool. TransNet software then determines the optimal routing path on the TransFab network for those wafers or reticles to travel to the inspection tool.

The TransFab Metroliner is available now -- with PRI providing the transport systems and related software and KLA-Tencor providing the 300mm inspection and metrology systems.

PRI Automation Releases Integrated Software Solution For Advanced 200mm and 300mm Semiconductor Manufacturing Facilities
P300 Combines Manufacturing Execution System, Advanced Planning and Scheduling, and Tool Connectivity Software for an Integrated Factory Management System
SAN FRANCISCO, SEMICON West, Booth #6168, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRIA - news), a global leader in advanced automation systems, software and services for the semiconductor industry, today announced the release of the P300(TM) factory management software solution. P300 integrates key components of a CIM solution and includes all the integration services required to implement and install a complete system. When combined with PRI's TransFab(TM) unified material handling system, chipmakers have a complete, integrated solution that manages all of the wafer and reticle automation systems, as well as the key production data to improve the productivity of both 200mm and next generation 300mm fabs.

``Time to first silicon is money,'' said Richard Vatcher, vice president and general manager of PRI's Software Division. ``Today's demanding marketplace requires fabs to get up and running as quickly as possible to take advantage of market opportunities. P300 provides a completely integrated, component- based software solution, specifically designed to provide an overall lower cost, a quicker implementation, and a faster semiconductor fab ramp-up. With highly-automated 300mm semiconductor facilities starting to become a reality, manufacturers are demanding a software system that is capable of the highest level of integration -- not only with the tools, but also with other software applications within the fab.''

Because more of the manufacturing process will be automated in 300mm fabs, manufacturers need new tools to let them make more informed business decisions and better manage their production resources. P300 is specifically targeted at the highly automated 300mm fab, but will be equally effective in 200mm fabs in getting the factory up and running in the shortest amount of time. The solution addresses key areas of a fab's CIM environment that will give chipmakers the ability to better manage the huge volumes of manufacturing data generated every day in the world's most complex manufacturing environment.

The P300 software solution integrates key components of PRI's factory management software including PROMIS® MES software platform, the industry's most mature and feature-rich MES solution, Leverage® for Scheduling, a real- time dispatching scheduler that automatically downloads and monitors model and WIP data from the PROMIS MES, Encore!® Composer for factory and process flow routing specifications and Work Flow Manager(TM) which dispatches material movement to TransNet(TM) MCS based on the continually updated factory schedule. No other system provides this level of pre-integration with a full factory scheduler. P300 provides lower overall cost to the customer due to pre-integration of all PRI software products. This greatly reduces the amount of costly systems integration effort while at the same time allows all the CIM components to come on line faster.

Along with the integrated components within P300, PRI offers integration and support services that will help its customers design, install, and support their semiconductor CIM environments.

PRI Automation Announces EquipeSoft Metaport
New Software Solution to Provide Systems Automation to 300mm Semiconductor Process Tools
SAN FRANCISCO, SEMICON West, Booth #6168 -- July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRIA - news), a global leader in advanced automation systems, software, and services to the semiconductor industry, today announced that it has released EquipeSoft(TM) MetaPort. The system automation software is designed as a configurable solution for 300mm semiconductor process tools. The product provides immediate and complete system software automation to process tools while also supporting industry-required SEMI 300mm software standards.

``Over the last 10 years, the design cycle of semiconductor products has accelerated dramatically,'' said Rick Vatcher, Vice President and General Manager of PRI Automation's Software Division. ``At the same time, the demands for software-related functionality in the tools that make those chips have exploded. This means that semiconductor equipment companies have much less time to do much more software development. MetaPort provides a full suite of system-level services and features as well as pre-integrated support for the full complement of 300 MM SEMI software standards. This is all packaged into a fully configurable system that enables OEMs to return their development focus to their value-added processes.''

MetaPort's configurability enables equipment engineers to select off-the- shelf automation components from a broad range of vendors. During mass production of a tool, vendors can be chosen based on lead-time, rather than by being designed into the product. Moreover, as end-user requirements dictate different automation configurations, the implications for the software department are negligible. When combined with PRI Automation's integrated front-end (IFE), process tool companies can achieve 300mm automation capability and standards compliance with minimal development expense.

The software is configurable for any combination of popular components for equipment front-end modules including load ports, handling robots, centering and aligning units, wafer and carrier ID readers, and other peripheral components. The full set of system-level automation features that EquipeSoft MetaPort provides includes: lot control, wafer flow scheduling, preventive maintenance, exception management, data collection, manual control, and user management.

Along with being compliant with SEMI software standards, EquipeSoft MetaPort also provides non-standard connectivity via paging, email, Web browsing, Web hosting, as well as COM/DCOM and CORBA interfaces for data, event, exception and lot management services.
