It probably could be but why cut down trees when we have a corn glut. Since you can drink ethanol and not methanol there may be some pollution in using methanol.

Dave, I found this on methanol-

Methanol is an alcohol made from natural gas or coal. It is corrosive and more volatile than ethanol and can damage plastic and rubber fuel system components.
