Unlike the Sony incident, in which a security gap was discovered in the "DoCoMo by Sony SO503i" handset software, the Digital Mova handset problem actually originates from the network side, and is limited to certain cells in DoCoMo's PDC network. DoCoMo says that the problem lies with some base stations, where there is a gap in the timing of radio wave transmissions between phones and the base station, which causes some Digital Mova P503i handsets to be unable to receive voice and email transmissions either every seven or 20 minutes. The glitch only affects incoming transmissions, and occurs only when the user remains in the affected cell and does not make or receive a call for a certain period of time, DoCoMo says. The problem affects around 100,000 Digital Mova P503i handsets, out of about 800,000 currently in circulation. DoCoMo says it can repair the problem by sending a controlling signal from its base stations, which will adjust the timing of radio wave transmissions. However, since it will take until at least mid-August to fix the problem, customers with affected handsets will have to bring their phones in for a software rewrite that will allow the handsets to work normally until the base station adjustments are completed. DoCoMo has suspended further sales of the Digital Mova P503i HYPER phone until July 23, after which it will start accepting affected handsets for software upgrades.
