"Is this supposed to mean you can plug an Alpha into an AthlonMP motherboard? Or that Alpha customers are moving to AthlonMP?"

The latter. The biggest problem was not the price of the UP1500, but the refusal of API to actually ship Alphas. And when they shipped, apparently it was only luck that you got the clock rate/cache size you ordered. What this article is saying that instead of a UP1500 with an Alpha, the integrators switched to a Tyan Thunder with AthlonMP(s).

For what it is worth, the UP1500 uses an AMD 760 northbridge...

Sounds like AMD has secured a beachfront in low end server space as Alpha customers move to AthlonMP...Let's hope AMD can provide the excellent customer service in this niche that customers have grown accustomed to in other markets in which AMD has a presence. Great growth opportunity here to complement the growth opportunity in the mobile space.
