I am not fond of fringe science, or of State-supported art. The Curies and Pasteur were fringe until they became mainstream.

Scientists who break the mold successfully get famous, and very likely rich. We're all motivated by cash prizes.

Religious figures who beak the mold are likely to be expelled from their groupings; That guy that Pilate crucified a couple thousand years ago stood on his convictions and did quite a bit of beaking he also came back with a vengeance brought the Roman world to ruin and influenced our history more than any single person.

...back when religions had real power they would have been executed. if you were living in the Arabian world you would see they still have real power.

Which would you expect to produce more new ideas?
Multiple choice?? How about accidental discovery, I've never seen a Machiavellian process in science it's mostly bumbling that finds things. However in hind sight when a paper needs to be written and a conference toodled off to things change and bumbling tends to morph into megalomania. This helps get additional funding for other projects but still it is mostly bumbling, which is fine.
