I couldn't agree more. Interest rate reductions alone can't solve the problem. Will it encourage more spending? Sure. But is that spending healthy? Do we really want to encourage the use of MORE credit - NO WAY. People already spend more than they earn so that brings us to taxes. Although I realize we NEED to pay income taxes I don't think that SS should be part of that equation. As I posted earlier - we owe it to people who have been in the system for many years to make sure they are taken care of. Outside of that it's time to make a change. The longer we delay the more generations we place in retirement peril. Most people find themselves in a 28% fed bracket. Add the average 5% state income tax (not all states have one) and the 15.3% SS tax and what do you get. 48%!!! Thats right 48% of what we make is handed over to a wasteful government and that doesn't even include taxes such as sales, gas, beer, smokes and so on and so on. These people never met a a tax they didn't like. The time is now to stir the pot and get the ball rolling. My fear is that the 2002 election could hurt the chances of real SS reform. The democrats are not fans of "we the people" being in charge of our own money. They love the power of that fat SS account because it allows them to cook the books and keep those many failing social programs afloat. As I have said before....if we made a change SS would have to be payroll deducted just like it is now...that is a must! It's not optional! But I for one can easily say my family would be better off financially with that money in my name as an asset that I could hand to them instead of Uncle (son of) Sam. Civil Disobedience folks....remember that. Nothing big ever happens in the country without it.
