It's a close call because it does have to do with the market and the Fed, but I'd suggest taking the political/government portion of this discussion here:

Hi Agustus,

Maybe I need to update my macroecon files. Would you go for 10,000 individuals controlling 99.5% of the wealth to be too much? <vbg>

With a wink and a nod, I think you may have a basic mis-conception of the Ponzi scheme called Social Security. It's a pay-as-you-go system and has nothing to do with your idea of saving for retirement. What we all do today is pay for the last generation. This, of course, is a hugely risky business going forward, since the number of workers per retiree in 1950 was about 40 to 1 and by 2030 will approach 2 to 1. This is clearly an unsustainable system, and a huge and hugely resented drain on currently productive members of society. My recommendation is thinning the herd, but that seems to be a bit radical for most folks to countenance. <vbg>

I understand the need for taxes but I don't understand THEIR need to control my retirement.

I'm not sure I understand exactly how the proposal to take SS private will work.

There's probably a lot of people that can manage their own money but I would guess that most people haven't a clue as to what to do. They understand that they put in so much and when they retire, they'll get it all back. That's simplistic but probably the truth.

Young people wouldn't contribute because they don't think that far ahead and don't make that much money.

As I said, I don't understand how a private SS would work. Is it mandatory? How would people choose where to put their money?

I really can't talk very intelligently on the idea because I'm not very familiar as to how it's supposed to work.
