Advice on places to go in the wine country would be great too.

For really close in, check out Rosenblum in Alameda.

For the real wine country, the hoards usually head to Napa, but I find it crowded, hot, and the wineries much less friendly ... even the junk places charge for tasting. Sonoma, on the other hand is more scenic and there are lots of places where you can actually talk to the winemaker in a relaxed setting. Check out wineroad.com for an overview.
