I drive a car with a standard transmission and, from my experience, the dangerous part of cell phone use in a car is entering the number to be called. That requires me to look at the keypad and I can't do that and keep my eyes on the road too. Maybe with a little more practice it would be possible to dial without looking but I doubt many people can do that. Again, I'm sure it's possible but, in practice, that skill is rare. That, in my mind, destroys the analogy with the stick shift which is easily operated without looking at it.
