Microsoft, the world's largest software company, said Wednesday that it will report a $2.6 billion fiscal fourth quarter loss because of a $3.9 billion noncash charge from losses in certain cable and telecom securities.

It's not nice to gloat at the misfortune of others, but I have to admit it is good to finally see someone who has taken a worse hit than me. <g>

My guess is that the largest single reason for Q lowering its estimates for this, and coming soon for next, quarter is the decrease in investment income. We have had some discussion of the value to earnings of including this source of income. Some of the largest cash hoard companies (MSFT, INTC, and yes QCOM) have used this to make numbers, and now for the first time in years it is going to bite back. I have a feeling this issue will take a role of greater importance in the near future.
