It lacked a word motivator that would have had meaning to the rock collector, i.e. the correct name of the ore. The professor was a figure of authority and one would hope trust. The area at the time was not a "kimberlite-rich area".

However in the end the joke was on the "big company" because the portion that was on surface had been rafted there from a long ways away. Eventually the primary area was staked out and the big company had to buy in paying millions.
