Funding is part, but not all the equation in scientific inquiry and outcome. Some scientists just have political and social beliefs which cloud their views, no matter what. As to killing trees, yes, I can't be responsible for today's run. But my subscription cancellation in favor of reading on-line (which I do) might have an impact on future demand. :) As to making Earth uninhabitable for our species.....well, I hope not. Maybe we are. Maybe things outside our scope of influence are. I could present all sorts of scenarios where we do our best to prevent them, but simple facts like population increase, without any other factors, portend our doom. Maybe just our being here and reproducing at the rate we are spells doom.
