I'm not suggesting that the "applying themselves to tilt the balance of freedom" is conscious or intentional, though in some cases it is. But in some or many cases it's that they really believe that more government is better, they distrust the capitalist system and distrust the motives of individuals (I know one social worker who, in a moment when she was being honest and let her professional face slip, who said "all men are basically birth defects," and she really meant it). With that philosophy, is it any wonder that she felt a calling to find a government position where she could protect children from all men, including their fathers?

Gotta run -- off to catch ferry. Will continue this interesting and important discussion when I return in a few days.
