The Nasdaq Composite began the session on a positive note but volatile/choppy trading quickly took hold. This was actually an encouraging development considering the way that it closed on Tuesday and the plethora of negative news/reports. Compaq (CPQ +0.53) maintained its outlook for Q2 but warned on revenue and said it would slash more jobs due to spreading overseas weakness. This same theme of a extending economic malaise was evident in the Comverse Tech (CMVT -12.52) warning. It seems that the market perceived the action by CPQ to be proactive and greeted it with a favorable response. This same type of greeting was seen in the computer-hardware sector (already down more than 20% this year) despite the estimate cuts by UBS Warburg on DELL (+0.37), Hewlett-Packard (HWP +0.34), PC growth rate cuts by Merrill Lynch and speculation that Dell was becoming more aggressive on pricing which raises the specter of a price war. The negative news did not end there as CSFB questioned a recovery in the software sector, First Union brought up the subject of companies folding in the optical space and Goldman downgraded several telecom stocks. The trading pattern was the same for the Dow but its performance was more bullish as it benefited from gains in GM (+2.73), IBM (+1.89), SBC Comm (SBC +1.77), Microsoft (MSFT +2.02) and Wal-Mart (WMT +1.35). Some of the best performing sectors were auto and gold. GM and Daimlerchrysler (DCX +2.42) rose after favorable Street comments and gold appeared to benefit as a safe haven amid the increasing problems in Latin America. The lack of follow through on the afternoon push was not particularly surprising as market internals maintained a firmly negative bias throughout the session. This is a reflection of investor caution in front of earnings season which begins today. A few positive developments on this front coupled with the oversold technical posture could help bring some of the sidelined cash back into the fray.

Hi Harry,

I'm not going to push too much. While deciding to go long yesterday and day before, I really had to scratch my head and think hard to pick tech stocks. Probably many others feel the same way too. Even with the high put to call ratio, I will be very nimble and careful on the long side.

Later,

Suresh
