InfoSpace abandons Pier 70 Go2Net signs come down on remodeled 99-year-old facility Thursday, July 12, 2001 By JOHN COOK SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Pier 70 on Seattle's waterfront got a major makeover last year when the Internet company Go2Net moved in. Now the 99-year-old pier, which has housed assorted activities from a dance club to MTV's "The Real World," is losing its dot-com tenant. The Go2Net signs were removed from the two-story building yesterday, and InfoSpace, which acquired Go2Net a year ago, said it is trying to sublease the space. As many as 200 people worked in the 87,000-square-foot building earlier this year. But that number has dwindled in recent months as InfoSpace has cut staffing levels and consolidated operations at its headquarters in Bellevue. "It makes sense to have our teams in one place," InfoSpace spokesman Steve Stratz said. Stratz was not sure what would happen to the Go2Net signs and said he had not heard reports that InfoSpace employees had unsuccessfully tried to buy them. InfoSpace, he said, has been trying to sublease the pier facility since March. But the company has found few takers. "It is a big unique space," he said. "And we are not just going to take anything for it." Ken Knoke, manager of the Waterfront restaurant on Pier 70, said InfoSpace's departure will have little impact on his business. "We are a dinner-only house; we don't do a lunch trade," said Knoke, who watched some of the signs come down earlier this week. He said the seafood restaurant is doing more business this year than last, when it opened. Go2Net moved into the facility in June 2000.
