Dishonest? If you bother to read the financial statements and managements discussion of events for each earnings period, everything is disclosed. Pro Forma results simply remove extraordinary events or non-operating events in order to simplify operating comparisons between periods.

The investment community are the ones who look at Pro Forma results as a means of evaluating operating performance. Don't blame MSFT for your failure to follow due diligence.

It isn't that new. Intuit was one of the first companies to successfully do this when they purchased Chipsoft in 1993.
