Here's Microsoft's press release of Jan. 18, 2001 announcing earnings for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2000. Note the prominence of the $0.47/share; no other EPS number is given for that quarter that I see:

microsoft.com

Here's the corresponding more complete information as filed with the SEC:

microsoft.com

Do you see where the $0.47 comes from (hint: it's just past the TOC)? Do you agree that it includes investment income?

Certainly the full information is available if you dig. But the number they have highlighted includes investment income. I don't see anything particularly wrong with that as long as when the investments go sour their treatment is similar (although I do think earnings from operations is more significant, and have said so here many times before). If the treatment of investment income is one-sided, then I think it's misleading. No rocket science intended.

JMHO. Do your own research and form your own conclusions.
