Seems you get labeled a "reformer" if the newsperson agrees with what you're trying to change.

On the churchgoer reference, some people would argue that very few rapists and murderers go to church regularly. Of course, there are notable exceptions, like members of the Mafia or a certain disgraced ex-President. But I can see how the reference of good=churchgoer would bother some people.
