It simply reflects the LOWER IPC (Instruction per clock)
rate of the Pentium 4. Final result depends on overall
efficiency of the memory subsystem (DRAM/L2/L1+AGP+IDE)
and drivers, where Athlon is lagging by about 40% by now.
However, at 1600 (WS=~73.4) it will beat the P4@2000 on
this benchmark (heavily "net-burst" optimized BTW).

I'm sorry, I don't buy it... it runs across ALL of the benchmarks, not just one heavily optimized one. Furthermore, the P4 2.0GHz will be out long before the 1.6GHz K7... I would worry about comparing the 1.6GHz K7 (which I scaled out to 73.58, BTW), to a 2.2GHz P4 (which scales out to 76.6 or 77.79 depending on whether you use the 1.3GHz-1.8GHz numbers or the 1.3-2.0GHz numbers... overall I thought the agreement was in the noise).

also, the scaling on Content Creation Winstone was one of the more K7 friendly ones... Running the numbers as compared to a 2.2GHz P4... (due Q4).

Business Winstone: est 59-62 for P4, a 1.8GHz K7 would still fall short.

Internet Content Creation: est 237.5-239.2 for P4, K7 would need to be at >1.8GHz (est 201.48) to keep up.

Office Productivity: Est 179.7-181 for P4, K7 would need to be at >1.8GHz (est 170.21) to keep up

SYSMark 2001: Est 207.5-207.7 for P4, K7 would need to be >>1.8GHz (est 184) to keep up.

OBench - Baseline LL: Est 25.56-25.95 for P4, K7 would need to be >>>1.8GHz (est 28.25) to keep up.

OBench - LL1: Est 30.32-31.64 for P4. K7 would need to be at 1.7GHz to 1.8GHz (est 31.62 and 30.80) to keep up.

Obench - LL2: Est 63.42-70.15 for P4. K7 would need to be at >1.5 to 1.7GHz (est 71.56 and 64.29 respectively) to keep up.

Studio Max - Anand: Est 15.42-15.71 for P4, K7 would need to be at 1.5GHz (est 15.47) to keep up. (the only benchmark where the K7 really shines)

Truespace: Est 30.88-32.71 for P4, K7 would need to be >>1.8GHz (est 28.16) to keep up.

Quake III: Est 256-267 for P4, K7 would need to be >>>>1.8GHz (est 208.16) to keep up.

DroneZ: Est 128.76-140.63 for P4, K7 would need to be >1.8GHz (est 114.10) to keep up).

In short, the 2.2GHz P4 based on Willamette scaling which is due in Q4 will mop the floor with a 1.8GHz K7 chip in all but one or two select benchmarks. I don't see AMD actually having that 1.8GHz chip out to compete with the Intel flagship...The K7 is great design, but given the superior scaling of the P4, it's clear that it is not architecturally in the same league as the P4 for the long haul...
