The vetting of the innocent is a ten year post conviction process which is built into the appeals process. That's why no innocents ever get executed.

And I certainly wouldn't characterize the majority as totally innocent. The vast majority get off on prosecutorial technicalities, even though they committed the murder. In fact, there are almost no criminals on death row who don't have priors.
