"You seem to be fixated on one benchmark... and it looks like a simple rounding difference... I ran all mine thru Excel and let it run the math..."

Of course I was mostly nitpicking, but it is not a
rounding difference, and the math was run by Excel too.
You simply are doing estimations in wrong parameter
domain. For an idea for more accurate analysis, see:

specbench.org

"For the sake of argument, however, let's say it is chipset differences. Shouldn't AMD be providing an integrated solution?"
I don't know. Maybe, it depends . What I know is that
they are making the same mistake as you - vastly
underestimating CPU stalls due to system latencies.

"I could probably drop a Ferrarri 8-cylinder into a Toyota Camry with enough effort... but it wouldn't give the same level of performance as it would have in a Ferrarri..."

According to those benchmark numbers, AMD Athlon IPC is
about 80% better than P4, except on BAPCO CC where it
is only 20% better (I didn't check 3D rendering and
gaming performance though). Using your auto-example,
AMD is doing way better on corners and when passing,
while P4 seems to be better on straight highway.
So the level of performance depends on where you are
driving. Remember that all new 2001 benchmarks are
optimized for Intel "NetBurst" motto of driving.
