Thanks Drew for that up-close and personal view of the browser wars. Now that I think of it, I did use Netscape's browser back in 1995 and I can't recall what I used before that. Mosaic? Before that, [1993 - 1994], I used a Compuserve connection [at great expense].

I haven't seen anyone answer the idea that there is no monopoly because anyone can make browsers, operating systems and software of any sort and there are already many choices. The only respect in which there is a monopoly is if the definition of the product is so narrow that only Microsoft's software is included.

"We, the Three Wise Judges of the court, hereby declare that Microsoft has a monopoly of the software written by Microsoft and that is illegal, especially when they write some more software to go with that software to extend its functionality".

I will remain concerned because QUALCOMM will become a much bigger monopoly than Microsoft [if monopolies are defined in such narrow ways] and QUALCOMM will be attacked. Fortunately, they have been spinning-off so fast that nobody can get a grip [yet].

Drew,

what evilsoft did to the browsers are inexcusable.

What you said is absolutely true. I have IE on my computer while my wife has Netscape on hers. Is there much difference, I don't think so.

Now why is that? Do you remember the days when we have a new and improved version of Netscape and IE every 6 months, or less? After MSFT bundled IE and destroyed Netscape's incentive to put any more money into it, all innovation (Evilgates favorite word) ceased.

In the end, the consumer lost again. When was the last browser upgrade? The consumer (Gates' word for sheep) will only see a better browser when MSFT decide it is appropriate.

Just imagine the type of browsers that would be available to the consumers today if there are two, three or more competitors.

That is why everytime I see Gates on TV, talking about how he innovates to help the consumers, I get that sick feeling in my stomach. Only the stupid sheep in NZ would be so happy, as they are led to the gateslaughter house to be processed into lamb chops.

ps Mq, please be succinct with your response. <gggg>
