Samsung Elec losing money in chip sales
By Kim Miyoung

SEOUL, July 13 (Reuters) - The world's top computer memory chipmaker, Samsung Electronics, said on Friday it lost money on its key memory chips in June but expected to post a profit for the quarter on overall gains for its semiconductor unit.

Samsung officials said the company had losses in June from sales of some dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, including its key 64 megabit (Mb) DRAMs.

"We are not losing money in our mainstay 128Mb chips," a company official said. "We also expect hefty sales from non-memory chips."

Company spokesman James Chung said it was still tallying June earnings ahead of releasing mid-year results on July 20.
