Hynix to start steps for output cut next week

Hynix Semiconductor is preparing to implement a product cut starting next week, a company official said yesterday.

"We have finally reached the conclusion that output reduction is inevitable to prevent a further drop in memory chip prices," the official said. "Actual output cut is expected to begin toward the end of this month."

The official said that management will decide on the magnitude and method of the output cut after starting the preparations.

He said that the company is considering various options, including suspending the operation of some of its production lines by letting workers take a holiday collectively.

Industry watchers said the output cut would be set at around 20 percent of the company's monthly production.

UMC (2303 TT) announced lay-offs involving 266 of its 9,300 employees in Taiwan after expressing concerns about its prospects for 3Q01. Rumor has it that UMC will continue to report negative mom sales growth in July as the firm continues to suffer from overexposure to the telecom sector, which accounted for 48% of the firm’s sales in 1Q01.

UMC, which had 9,373 employees at the end of 2000, also stopped installing chip-making equipment in a factory and told about a hundred workers to take a vacation until the end of the year on 60 percent salary or transfer to an overseas plant or research center. UMC spokesman Alex Hinnawi wouldn't confirm or deny the report.

TAIPEI, July 16 (Reuters) - Taiwan stocks tumbled more than four percent in late trade on Monday as margin-call selling continued from last week, the Taiwan dollar fell sharply and worries over a slowing economy persisted.

Brokers said Friday's tumble to a seven year closing low triggered margin calls that were continuing on Monday.
