There are plenty of reports lambasting AMD'sa AthWiper chips for stability problems - many of them having to do with VIA chip sets.

I don't think that's the answer, since prior to the release of 815 chipset, there were Intel business systems out there offering PC-133 memory, and Via was the only vendor for those at the time. At that time, Via achieved huge market share, while Intel chipset share suffered badly.

The Intel and AMD versions of the chipsets are not only similar, they in fact use the same south bridges.
