Consumer Confidence Up Again in July

Friday July 13 10:00 AM ET

<<NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. consumer confidence (news - web sites) edged higher for a third straight month in July as Americans kept their spirits up despite mounting job losses, a report showed on Friday.

The University of Michigan's preliminary July consumer sentiment index pushed up to 93.7 from 92.6 in June, extending a gradual rebound from a floor of 90.6 in February, its lowest level in nearly five years.

The expectations index, a gauge of attitudes about the coming year, rose to 89.5 after jumping to 86.9 in June.

But the current conditions index, an assessment of how consumers gauge their present financial fortunes, fell to 100.2 from 101.6 in June.

Economists say confidence has stabilized as hopes that aggressive Federal Reserve (news - web sites) interest rate cuts and front-loaded tax cuts will help engineer an economic turnaround later this year have offset worries over rising unemployment and struggling stock markets.>>

Hi Jim,

You mentioned a possible recovery next spring. If your talking about the economy recovering, then the market would start recovering in the fall, no?

Or are you saying you see the MARKET recovering next spring?

Or do you believe the market always predicts this stuff 6 months in advance?

And what about Ellie May? <g>

I got a zillion other questions, but these will suffice for now. <g>

Thanks,

:0)
