I think the police think he is guilty, or the prime suspect, at least. But they aren't saying anything until enough evidence is gathered and he can be charged with a crime. They don't want to prejudice the case.

You make a cogent and interesting observation, he never shows emotion... wouldn't an innocent and concerned friend at least show some worry or concern about one's friend being reported missing for so long? I think this reveals the cold bloodedness of his nature, I think he's dangerous and clearly not to be believed, not at this point anyhow.....
