It's extremely difficult to draw a bright line where insult and hypersensitivity meet. I continually try to do so, but I realize how hazy it is.

I think there may be no bright line to draw. Perhaps more of a spectrum, gradually shading from one to the other.
In some case the middle might be where both sides have something of a point. In other cases they could both be a bit ridiculous or uselessly difficult.
