I've seen this debate pop up in the past. I think it was around early 1999 when AMD was losing money on K6-2 and accused Intel of starting a price war with Celeron. I've heard it argued (IIRC) that when you are up against a competitor with an extraordinary amount of market share, you cement the gains you already have through marketing and customer relationships, then nibble upward from there. Competing on price alone is a sure-fire way to get the competitor starting a price war. Not only that, but then your customers expect nothing less but the cheapest prices from you from there on out.
