re: This obviously isn't universally true, since they clearly had great profits last year despite lower volume, and no marketing. I think it's more to do with a recessionary market, and I think we'll find that Intel, and the rest of the semi conductors are probably in pretty much the same boat with regards to profits.

That was when Intel was capacity constrained, and Athlon had the MHz lead. The same conditions might not apply as we come out of this tech recession.

re: Consumers are used to cheaper computers. After we set the new low ceiling, it will be difficult to impossible to convince consumers to raise the ceiling on system cost again.

Actually, the low end system prices are higher than they have been, at times, in the past. Remember free PC's (with Internet activation). It's the high end that's hurting. Can the two companies get back to pricing their fastest processors at a significant premium? That's a good question.
