Germans Condemn Harvest of Embryos Made for Research

F.A.Z. BERLIN. German politicians, religious leaders and
scientists reacted angrily on Thursday to the news that a
U.S. institute had harvested stem cells from 40 embryos
created via in vitro fertilization solely for research purposes.

Social Democrat Margot von Renesse, the chairwoman of a
parliamentary commission on the law and ethics of modern
medicine, said human life must not be produced with the aim
of destroying it again. In vitro fertilization, she said, should
have only one purpose and that was to enable couples with
fertility problems to have a child.
