I'm not inclined to believe that. I think the real exercize is "in what way can we define what we do so as to not feel bad about ourselves".

Rationalization is the process by which we provide socially acceptable excuses for socially unacceptable behavior, and socially unacceptable behavior is a form of insanity.

You are going down a slippery slope. After all how many coma paitents who reach the "persistent vegitavive state" ever come out of the coma. Answer - not too many. How many fetuses and children eventually become self aware - Answer - most.
