What will be interesting to see is whether or not Itanium is too little too late to save SGI.

No company stands to gain as much from Itanium as SGI. For years SGI was losing market share to the HP PA-RISC and DEC Alpha because the MIPS processor could not keep up. They attempted to break into the server market to offset their losses in the visualization market, but were not able to attract the software base for their high end MIPS based servers and were no better than Gateway at grabbing market share in the PIII Xeon arena.

Itanium will be the great leveler. Either its rising tide will raise all ships, with SGI getting a particularly healthy boost going from MIPS to Itanium, or its receding flow will carry the likes of HP and Compaq into just as deep of water as SGI. If SGI can make it through 2002, Itanium could be just what they need to take them into the big time, especially if Intel has the rights to market True64 to third parties.
