My understanding of the treaty (I have not seen the actual text) is that it prohibits the US from developing any ABM system at all.

My understanding is that we can build a system that is similar to what the Soviets have. I have read the text, but it's been too long ago.

I think there was a recent story in the news that dealt with the matter; then there's the treaty. I don't want to look it up. How about you?

Yes, the US was (apparently) hypocritical about missiles in Cuba vs. Turkey. So what?
(Actually, in a secret addendum to the treaty, JFK agreed to remove those Turkish missiles.)

Just a point made; every nation should be entitled to be hypocritical without criticism; or both with criticism. I think our diplomats always had trouble selling to the Soviets the notion that we were the good guys and they were the bad guys.

It might be a reasonable speculation that JFK, by the very nature of the addendum you refer to, came to the conclusion that it would be "fair" to remove the weapons from Turkey.

My compliments on your awareness of the addendum. Pretty arcane stuff. Relatively few sickos are aware of it, you and I are two of them.
