Well, actually, for those conservatives in public office- -as all others in public office- -it's to get re-elected. If that means throwing away most of the philosophy they supposedly hold, so be it. This philosophy, however. has led to a slow drift to the left. As you point out, Bush would make a good 1950's Democrat, and most of those now in prison would not have been considered criminals 100 years ago.

I'd pick #1, but most of those in office effectively pick #2. The only things at issue is who gets what state-supplied benefits and how much they get.
