This is no small thing - Elektra is the agent for Western Union in México so they are quite established with something approaching banking ... we deal with them a fair amount, putting kids through university so we're always sending down small amounts, they make it arrive in minutes, as fast as we can call to the recipient it's at the Elektra store in whatever city ... quite a small town in the case we use most ... there are millions like us, sending money home from Canada and the US, and a multiplier effect means that x times our millions have contact with Elektra ... they could be quite influential if they price this Libertad fairly ... which remains to be seen, could be just another ripoff, we shall see.

Years ago the peso mexicano was by definition one fine ounce of silver, lots of older people remember this well, lots have had experience with the relative value over time of real money compared to paper ... and there's a patriotic touch to silver as well, it is recognised as native, local, domestic ... also recognised as money in the language - following close behind the most common slang for money, lana, is plata ... for example, 'to be filthy rich' - estar podrido en plata ... literally 'rotten in silver' ... sort of rolls off the tongue nicely doesn't it -g-
