. Maybe banking on China isn't such a shrewd idea...

You may be right. The British failed to sell China until they discovered that they would buy Opium. The next main item was "Oil for the Lamps of China". I don't know how much Oil Rockefeller sold there, but that was the mercantile battlecry at the turn of the Century.

However, people will buy some things no matter how poor they are. Go into any American poor area and you will find that people make the payment on the Color TV and Cable connection, no matter how tight things get. Cell phones seem to be an item like that.

On the other hand, China is a Nation of Huts, with an occasional Palace. America is a Nation of Palaces, with an occasional hut. Don't think so? Parade 100 Chinese nationals, picked at random, though the worst American slum you can find, and listen to their reaction to the wealth they perceive there.

This coming Olympics, chosen today to go to China, will be interesting test. I keep thinking of pictures of Hitler at the '36 Berlin Games.

re: Wireless Voice & Data Tornado - An Asian (Chinese) View

I've enjoyed the lively discussion that has evolved from your posting about China (wireless), although if I can't get our guest and my partner mightylakers to RTFRM, I may have to send him my audio tapes, and give him a quiz a month later <g>.

I have just posted an article from a China source and the accompanying tables on the "3G Cellular" thread. It may be interesting to some here.

This article discusses the convergence of mobility and Internet from an Asian perspective.

Please note that the term "3G" is used somewhat loosey goosey in the article text and in the tables it contains. For the most part "3G" seems to be used for messaging to some degree but primarily for mobile Internet access, regardless if the underlying technology is 3G, 2.5G, or 3G.

Forecasts to 4 to 5 years out are crystal ball gazing, but I think it is interesting to look at forecasts out of Asia and compare them to those originating in Europe and the US (even if Europe and US research houses originate them).

The text of the article is here:

The following link contains the tables contained in the article which contain some pretty aggressive forecasts that bode well for the tornado we are watching for:
