To: maceng2 who wrote (514 ) 7/14/2001 12:24:33 AM From: craig crawford Read Replies (2) | Respond to of 1643 i'm not trying to be argumentative, but i think the whole human rights issue is a bunch of overblown western propaganda. i don't watch much tv but i have the last couple of days, and on cnbc and cnn and news programs like that they can't do one single story on china without mentioning the human rights issues. always this must be brought up. there are so many more important things going on there but the humans rights issues always rise to the forefront. you know the chinese media outlets could also make us americans sound pretty despicable if they wanted to. they could run news stories highlighting how there are these gangs in the streets who drive by in a car and shoot you because you are wearing the wrong color clothes. then they could show footage of school shootings like columbine and make the chinese people believe that kids blow away other kids on a regular basis in schools. then they could show police in NY shooting black men reaching for their wallet, and they could show the police in places like LA surrounding a defenseless man and beating him senseless with billy clubs. then they could show old footage of police spraying black people with firehoses, they could show ATF agents torching people in waco, firing on a wife and children in idaho, etc. of course the western media loves to vilify the chinese for their detention of the american pilots, but do they present fair and balanced coverage and demand to know why the u.s. govt deliberately bombed the chinese embassy, killing innocent people? you might catch a mention here or there, but it gets quickly swept under the rug. of course the u.s. govt and western media loves to stick their nose where it doesn't belong and vilify china for it's disputes with taiwan. how would we have liked it if china came over during our civil war and said they were going to defend and support the south's efforts to secede from the union? we would have said mind your own business, this is our affair. how is the chinese taiwan situation any different? anyway i could go on and on with more examples, but my point is i don't believe everything i hear from the western press about china. they have an agenda to push. of course china is not perfect and i'm sure there are human rights abuses, but don't forget we execute people here as well. china has almost 5 times as many people so sure they are going to have more incidents and executions to report. the solution is not to isolate china from the rest of the world and demand they follow our guidelines. the solution is to quit trying to tell china how to run their own country and welcome them into the fold of global capitalism. the rest will take care of itself. once you start the capitalism ball rolling it will be nearly impossible to stop it, and economic freedom is just the first building block to personal freedom. it's much easier to control the masses when they are kept uneducated and poor. once a society has a taste of economic freedom the populace will demand personal freedom. china has a young vigorous population who will steer the country in the right direction, and the old-line communists accept this. that is why they have agreed to relinquish power and hand it over to the younger more idealistic members of the party in the coming years.
