3G handsets a mixed blessing for IC makers, report says
eetimes.com
Excerpt: ABI estimates that the bill of materials for 3G phones will be 79% higher than for basic GSM models available today, and 49% higher than for 2.5G models.
That, plus the cost of new spectrum and the new infrastructure will not make UMTS a popular bargain. Taking the expensive route to 3G does have consequences. Some one will have to pay. And eventually it will be the users.
