If you think high level military appointments are not political, then you are sorely mistaken.

I'm quite aware of the political nature of star appointments. But it isn't the politics of handing over $100,000 in soft money to get the ambassador slot to Switzerland.

Shelton was no fan of Clinton and it certainly was no secret in the halls of the Pentagon.
