Telstra PCCW mull US1.6b bid for M1
2001-07-14

Terms and Conditions

Telstra and its Asian partner Pacific Century CyberWorks are being pressured to raise the ante for second-tier Singapore telecom company MobileOne.

This is amid market talk that M1 will be withdrawn from sale.

It is understood that Telstra-PCCW joint venture is considering a US$1.6 billion bid for M1 in a mix of cash and convertible bonds.

This will be greater than Malaysia's Maxis Communications' bid of US$1.4 billion.

But the pressure to raise the bids comes at a time when Singapore's economy is slipping into a technical recession.

Analysts say this could impact on M1's longer term operations and valuation.
